Swallow started her career in Broadway theatre which she acted in a variety of productions, including High Fidelity, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Guthrie Theater, Much Ado About Nothing for Shakespeare in the Park, and the first-ever off-Broadway world premieres of productions Romantic Poetry and Measure for Pleasure. Swallow debuted in film as a dramaturge from the military, The Lucky Ones. The film premiered at the Los Angeles Geffen Playhouse of Donald Margulies play The Country House. The Guthrie Theatre she performed alongside Mark Rylance as Nice Fish by Louis Jenkins. She was honored in 2010 with the Falstaff Award, which is given to the female actor who's performance is the best in a stage production. Her performance of the role in The Taming of the Shrew as Kate was the reason she received the award. Swallow as well as Jac Huberman, who is a comedian and singer, co-created the stage play Jac N Swallow in 2012. They performed the show in the New York's Laurie Beeckman Theater, and Joe's Pub. The show's comedy misadventures revolve around the two as they face different challenges in life in varying degrees of dignity and sanity. They're developing a show inspired by the characters. Nice Fish was premiered at the Guthrie Theater in 2013. She was involved in the development of it along together with Mark Rylance. In 2016, Center Theatre Group cast her as Ayad Akhtar and Disgraced. Swallow was cast in Guiding Light for her debut television role. After that, she was on Southland as well as Ringer, The Good Wife as well as NCIS. She was the FBI agents Kim Fischer in The Mentalist. 1-7 She was Amara the Darkness in Supernatural's 11th Season.
